The most beautiful, inclined, compound, condensing, steam engine in the West Country will star in an episodeof the B.B.C.television series,The Onedin Line, in November.
At 42 revolutions a minute it drove the paddle wheels of the 61- year-old steamer, Compton Castle, moored alongside the quay at Kingsbridge last week.
Its quiet thumping accompanied the voices of stars Anne Stallybrass, Peter Gilmore and Harold Goodman in a sequence scripted on board a Turkish boat
For last week's film sequences they spent 50 hours taking off the wooden paddles so the boat would not leave the quayside when the engine started.
